The school had planned on taking the lions share of that office space, about 190,000 square feet at the corner of Maine Avenue and Ninth Street SW, raising the prospect of a waterfront swarming with students attending day and evening classes. Jim Huske, a senior vice president at the Graduate School, said the administration informed developer Monty Hoffman, chief executive of PN Hoffman, that it would pull out of the project due to government cutbacks and budget uncertainty. We had to move out of that and we let Monty know that probably a year and a half or two years ago now because the market became unstable, Huske said. Huske that with sequestration and the government shutdown, the school would remain in smaller space in LEnfant Plaza for the time being. When Southeastern University, based in Southwest D.C., folded in 2010, the Graduate School assumed some of Southeasterns students. Right now were sitting back and considering our options, he said. You just dont make an investment when there is such uncertainty. Developers PN Hoffman and Madison Marquette had planned to begin the first phase during the first quarter of this year, with completion expected in 2016. Despite the delay, Hoffman said that he has applied for building permits. The Washington Kastles tennis team, whose stadium is located on the site currently, has been looking for a place to relocate to make way for construction. Overall we feel very good about it, Hoffman said. Our tenancy and our letters of intent for restaurants are going very well and we are in for building permits. Hoffman said he was working with a prospective capital group to invest in the project.

USA TODAY Sports basketball Coaches Poll set for Thursday release

The Galaxy game was the poorest weve played since I arrived here, Torres said. We didnt have chances and didnt control the game. It was a difficult and frustrating match, but weve got to forget about it and improve. Weve got to regain the mentality we had up top, to attack and make it difficult for defenses. We want to close the season well. Torres seven goals are the most by a Chivas USA player since 2011, when Nick LaBrocca and Justin Braun each had eight, albeit with the luxury of a full season. No other player on the current roster has more than three goals this season. Get more Chivas USA news and updates at CDChivasUSA.com Despite the lack of productivity over the last month, Torres remains optimistic about Chivas USAs final two games. Perhaps most importantly, hes excited to find out what his next step will be. I will most likely return to Guadalajara, where Ill train, Torres said. Ill wait there until management decides what will be the next step. If I come back here, it will be with the mentality to have a good season and help us reach the postseason. But if I stay in Guadalajara, it will be to battle for a spot against the forwards they have there already. Ill compete so that Im noticed and can thrive in whatever comes next. Ill approach any situation with humility and desire to get better day by day. Im not just thinking about returning to Chivas.

Vena/The Jersey Journal By Joseph R. Vena/The Jersey Journal The Jersey Journal on October 19, 2013 at 3:00 AM, updated October 19, 2013 at 3:03 AM A free Irish music concert at the Bayonne Community Museum on Wednesday will be the latest in a series of free cultural events organized by the Bayonne St. Patricks Parade Committee. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the museum, located at Ninth Street and Broadway, and be open to the public. Tunes will be provided by New York band Dennis Gallery and Celtic Justice. The band, led by guitarist, Bronx native and former Miltown Malbay, County Clare, Ireland resident Dennis Gallery, plays popular and traditional Irish music. Jimmy Lavin plays the accordion and Tom Muggs Daly handles dual duties of drums and vocals. The concert is one of several events at Bayonne Community Museum this year set up by the Bayonne St. Patricks Parade Committee, which also sponsored the first concert at the museum featuring Irish-born musician and author Larry Kirwan in March of last year. The museum building was built in 1912 as the Bayonne Trust Company but was converted and remodeled through a number of grants after the city purchased the structure from Fleet Bank in 2002.

Remind yourself: She chose to be on this stage. On some level, she wants to be here. Youll feel like less of an intruder. Blake and Fiona titled this collaborative tour Anything We Want, which definitely didnt mean everything the audience wanted. Blake apologized after several women in the crowd shrieked out song requeststhe fate of the evening was already tied to his set list. This wasnt a show for those looking to hear a catalog of Fionas greatest hits; she played just one song each from When The Pawn… and Extraordinary Machine, and Tidal. (Although how could she perform more from “Tidal”? She wrote the damn thing when she was in high school.) Instead, the night was more about stage setting and theatrics. Drummer Barbara Gruska and bassist Sebastian Steinberg slammed their way through tracks we knewEvery Single Night, Dull Tooland other brand-new Blake/Fiona productions like Tipple and I Want You To Love Me. At some points, as Fiona spoke between songs, you could feel the audience holding its collective breath, hoping to sidestep the kind of freakout thats happened in other stops on this tour. No matterFiona said she loved Chicago, and hoped no [bleep]holes had shown up that night. How am I supposed to have my meltdown? I dont do Twitter , she joked.

Free concert of Irish music Wednesday at Bayonne Community Museum

While the movie portion of MTTN would never work by itself, there just isn’t enough to it to stand alone, it does fit perfectly within this hard hitting and heart pounding concert flick and does in fact turn what would normally be just another pre-recorded concert into something truly unique and special. But let’s be honest here, the real star of the entire production is the music and usually its fate would ultimately rest upon the quality of that music and/or its track selection. For a non-fan of Metallica or any sort of thrash metal (such as this reviewer), this can seem quite problematic at first, but the film is surprisingly not as reliant on you being a fan of the music or the band itself as one might assume. The reason for this is the brilliant choice by Metallica to bring on an actual film director, Nimrod Antal to make sure it was much more than just another concert film. The reason that was such a brilliant decision is because Antal approaches the material from the perspective of a story teller first, where as a stage director would put the focus squarely on the music aspect. This gives the film a very cinematic quality as he uses the music to tell a story instead of simply filming the band performing it (although, the concert footage is definitely no slouch) and transforms what would normally be just a simple concert film with multiple camera angles into an entirely different beast altogether. He uses the music to tell a story in a way that hasn’t really been seen before. This isn’t just another concert movie, this is a concert experience unlike any other. The fact of whether or not you are a fan of the music doesn’t even factor in since the unique blend of this fantastical story of a roadie traversing a city under fire and this spectacular stage show filled with some of metal’s most revered music transcends such petty conventions. The music fuels the intensity of the roadie sections and the roadie’s adventure gives the music a purpose beyond just the usual aural delights. If ever there were ever a case where two distinct pieces came together to make a satisfying whole, this is it. The only real issue with the film is that in the end, it feels more like a super long and overly elaborate music video than an actual feature film (although in that respect, this could be the best music video ever made).

Muse gets unsettlingly close in new concert film

(AP) Muse frontman Matt Bellamy had to be more than just camera-ready for “Muse – Live at Rome Olympic Stadium.” The British rock band’s new concert film was shot in 4K, which meant a whole new level of detail. “There’s weird things like hair and stuff that you probably would never pay attention to,” Bellamy said. “It’s so much more noticeably sharper that it’s almost unsettling at first.” “Muse – Live at Rome Olympic Stadium,” directed by Matt Askem , is the first concert film released in the new ultra high definition format. Also called 4K, UHD has a much better resolution than regular HD and is considered the next technological leap in film and television. Thousands of movies have been shot in 4K, but almost all of them have been shrunk down to HD format before being screened. Exceptions include Sony’s 2011 remake of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and Will Smith ‘s sci-fi adventure “After Earth.” Fans will get a first look at the Muse film Nov. 5 when it debuts in 20 cities around the globe, before expanding to 700 theaters worldwide the next day in 2K and 4K. Bellamy said in a phone interview Wednesday from Costa Rica that the band was inspired by U2’s use of then-new technology in the 2008 concert film “U23D,” so they decided to kick up the production values and aim for something a little more grand. A trailer shows video screens stories tall and pyrotechnics backing the band. Spider cameras crawled over rigging above the crowd during the July concert, and a pair of actors contributed abstract theatrical interpretations of some of the songs. Even so, Bellamy said when he saw the movie, his eyes often drifted away from the action on stage to the vivid details elsewhere.

Man Brutally Beaten Before Concert

Zander recounted how the Marines were allegedly bothering several women in his tailgating group, prompting him to step in and confront the men. He said Sharkey was the first Marine in the group to punch him in the face. Soon enough, others allegedly joined in on the beating. A short time later, Zander said the men came back and attacked him again leaving him with fractures all over his face. I said, Look at me, look what youve done to me. Arent you done yet? And I just started getting a flurry of hits after that, Zander recalled. I couldnt take them and I fell off the tailgate of the truck. I quickly tried to get up. I was getting hit in the head and noticed there was no way I could get up, Zander continued. There was all kinds of weight on my back, as if people were sitting or lying on me, and I just kept getting hit. He continued on the witness stand, recounting details of the pain he felt: Related Stories Marine Accused of Beating Concert Goer While I was on the ground, I was being hit repeatedly in the head. I felt a sharp pain in my leg. Thats when I assumed someone stomped on my leg broke it, or kicked it and broke it, Zander said. [I] also felt someones hand trying to gauge fingers in my eyes; I felt someone’s hand go in the side of my mouth and begin trying to turn my cheek to turn my head and expose it.” Zander was the first witness to take the stand at Thursdays hearing. In cross-examination, Sharkeys defense attorney asked Zander repeated questions about how much hed had to drink in the parking lot on the day of the fight, and whether he had ever tried to call for help from security or police during the ordeal. After the preliminary hearing, a judge will decide if there is enough evidence against Sharkey to send the case to trial. In a separate civil lawsuit, Zander is suing Live Nation entertainment and Staff Pro for failing to adequately protect guests from alcohol-fueled third party violence.

U.S. Market Should Be Part of a Portfolio: Shiller

“The reason this is happening is because of a poorly written law originally designed to stop slumlords from running illegal hotels with dozens of rental apartments,” Mishelle writes. “As a New Yorker just trying to pay my bills, I don’t understand why they think I’m a slumlord.” “I figure that if we get 20,000 people to sign the petition, we’ll get the state Senate’s attention,” she continues. “If we hit that goal by October 20th, I pledge to deliver the signatures to every senator myself.” As of this writing the petition has surpassed 20,000 signatures, the majority of which were gathered within the last 24 hours. Airbnb also got behind the petition on Monday by sending out an e-mail to its thousands of New York members. “The New York attorney general has subpoenaed the records of almost all of our New York hosts,” Airbnb’s global head of community Douglas Atkin wrote in the e-mail. “We are fighting the subpoena with all we’ve got, but poorly written laws make for even worse enforcement, and unless you help to stop it once and for all, the laws may never get better and New Yorkers will continue to suffer.” The debacle between New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Airbnb has been ongoing over the past year, but it got heated when Schneiderman filed a subpoena earlier this month. The subpoena requests three years’ worth of data on thousands of Airbnb New York hosts. Airbnb has said that it has 225,000 community members in New York. The Attorney General’s office is specifically looking for data on 15,000 hosts — it’s unclear if this includes almost all of Airbnb’s New York hosts. While Airbnb has said that it will cooperate with New York’s lawmakers to root out illegal hotel operators and slumlords, it also filed a motion last week stating the subpoena was “unreasonably broad” and it won’t turn over sweeping amounts of information on hosts who have done no wrong. Schneiderman’s subpoena is based on a 2011 New York state law that makes it illegal for New York residents to rent out a property for less than 29 days. The law is meant to protect renters, so that slumlords don’t force them to leave to make a quick buck on unlicensed hotels and short-term stays. After the petition popped up and Airbnb sent out its e-mail to New York members on Monday, a spokesman from Schneiderman’s office accused the service of fear mongering, according to the Wall Street Journal . Airbnb is “scaring and misleading thousands of well-intentioned New Yorkers and sending lobbyists to Albany to create legal loopholes,” spokesman Matt Mittenthal told the Journal.

New York magazine considers going biweekly

There is nothing definitive yet, he said. New York Magazine earned widespread praise for its striking cover showing the power blackout in Manhattan after Hurricane Sandy.Photo: AP The company is in the midst of its budget planning for next year in an increasingly tough environment for print. Bagaria declined to comment on profitability but said its not the first time the company has mulled the move. Over the past five years weve considered various options, he said. While digital ad sales are growing, it has not been enough to stem the shrinking dollars coming from the weekly print edition, increasing pressure on Editor-in-Chief Adam Moss. It would be sad if it happened, but it would not surprise me, said Steve Cohn, editor of Media Industry Newsletter, which showed that New Yorks ad pages were down 9.2 percent year-over-year through Oct. 14. Digital now accounts for about half the companys ad revenue, but that is attributable as much to prints steady erosion as it is to digitals gains in recent years. Before the recession, New York racked up 3,343 ad pages in 2007, according to MIN 1,500 pages more than it is expected to tally this year. Ad pages fell 12 percent in 2008, followed by a staggering 27 percent drop in 2009. And in a move that is sure to be worrisome as it pushes for digital dollars, Web traffic in September dropped to 3.6 million unique monthly visitors, according to comScore, a 16 percent drop from last year. A Wasserstein family trust inherited the magazine after the death of Bruce Wasserstein in 2009. The financier brought it for $55 million back in 2003. So far, the Wasserstein family has kept the magazine and websites rolling, but it is not clear what the trusts capacity is to absorb losses over a prolonged period. The most recent example in the weekly media world holds little promise.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New Yorks general economic index fell to 1.5, a five-month low, from 6.3 in September. Positive readings signal expansion in New York, northern New Jersey and southern Connecticut . The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a reading of 7. The gauge dropped even as orders climbed to the highest level in seven months, indicating production will probably pick up next month. The budget and debt-ceiling standoff in Washington may have shaken confidence within manufacturing, which makes up about 12 percent of the economy. A lot of manufacturers uncertainty can be blamed on the fiscal brinkmanship, rather than a deterioration in fundamentals, said Ryan Sweet , a senior economist at Moodys Analytics Inc. in West Chester , Pennsylvania, who projected the index would drop to 1. The improvement in new orders is reason for optimism. Stock futures were little changed, after a four-day rally took the Standard & Poors 500 Index to a three-week high, as investors weighed budget-talk developments. The contract on the S&P 500 maturing in December dropped less than 0.1 percent to 1,703 at 8:55 a.m. in New York. Survey Results Octobers estimates for the so-called Empire State index in the Bloomberg survey of 51 economists ranged from minus 2 to 10. The headline reading is a separate question rather than a compilation of subcomponents and is therefore sometimes considered a gauge of underlying sentiment. The measure of new orders increased in October to 7.8, the highest since March, from 2.4 the previous month. A gauge of shipments declined to 13.1 from a 16-month high of 16.4 in September.

While providers may complain that they are inundated by takedown requests Google says it receives more than a million each week to put the provision on the table risks ending up with something that saddles Internet sites with additional liability. In fact, when the green paper was unveiled, Michael Beckerman, president and CEO of the Internet Assn., a trade group formed in 2012 that includes Google, Facebook and Amazon among its members, said existing law works very well. In a statement to Variety, he said that the DMCA continues to fulfill its intended purpose of facilitating the growth and development of the Internet and the Web. In contrast, Hollywood and lobbying orgs representing other content creators complain that the safe harbor provision forces them into playing endless whacka-mole; even after enlisting their own monitoring services to find infringing content and send out takedown notices, they say piracy is still growing. While Beckerman warned that the green paper would be used by some interest groups as a call for new laws addressing online infringement, that prospect seems unlikely, not just because of the government shutdown, but because of skittishness among lawmakers to start anything like the unprecedented protest that sidelined the last major piece of antipiracy legislation, the Stop Online Piracy Act. House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., has launched a series of hearings with an eye toward revising copyright laws, but that process could take years, and undoubtedly would be contentious when and if it comes to revisiting the DMCA. The authors of the green paper recognized this, and have proposed that rather than pursue legislation, the tech and content industries should come up with their own set of best practices for identifying takedown notices. Thats easier said than done, of course. Google and others have had individual conversations with the studios; they are in business with most of them. But when it comes to hashing out a broad voluntary agreement across industries, there are, tellingly, no serious discussions. Sherwin Siy, VP of legal affairs at the public interest group Public Knowledge, said via e-mail that best practices agreements can be a big help, as they can inform players what is and what isnt useful to the other side, and provide some guideposts for dealing with a complex situation. But there can be drawbacks, he noted, as when there are not methods for redress and appeal. The problem is that complaints of abuse or mistake get the runaround. Google has argued that it has been prompt in responding to takedown requests 57 million last year, with an average response time of less than six hours, the company said and that it has been proactive in removing ad services to sites that violate its copyright policy.

I’m From Hollywood – how Andy Kaufman tried to combine comedy and wrestling

Any one could be a dead end. Every one could be the golden ticket. The only mistake is to not try the biggest, boldest thing you can think of. What the makers of ” Thula ,” a short film that is having its LA premiere this week thought of was to fly all the the way to South Africa to shoot a very personal-scale story. I recently sat down with the filmmaking team of Jahmela Biggs , Caitlin Talbot and James Bland to talk about how they pulled together an international shoot on the back of a crowdfunding campaign. We started with the choice to go to South Africa in the first place. “The decision to shoot there was made before we had the script,” said writer-actor Biggs. “Or the crew,” added her co-star Talbot. “Or the money,” tagged in director Bland . “Right, exactly, or the financing,” continued Biggs. “So we decided pretty early on we wanted to make that happen.

Hollywood, Big Tech on Collision Course Over Who Should Police the Internet

X Your Kinja blog will upgrade to our latest design on October 18 at 6AM EDT. Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame Throws Some Serious Shade At Kim Kardashian Kanye West, in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel that you might have missed last week, talked about how it was ludicrous that his baby mama Kim Kardashian did not have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. How did the Walk of Fame team respond? With a big resounding “Fuck thaaaat.” As a Walk of Fame spokeswoman Ana Martinez explained to the NY Daily News, Theyre not giving a performance, its just them going through their daily lives and rituals on TV. We honor people whove acted in or directed or produced an award-winning show or film. And its the same with music, people who maybe have gold records. Not even shade so much as a brutally true insult. Though perhaps Martinez is unaware that Keeping Up With The Kardashians actually did take home a statue: they won Favorite TV Guilty Pleasure at the 2011 People’s Choice Awards. And no one can doubt how hard Kardashian worked to stage those supposedly overseas scenes. Kardashian and the star-studded sidewalk have more in common than you may think: they’re both cultural institutions that no one really cares about and both have been urinated upon by random men, but Martinez is rightthe Walk of Fame is a Hollywood institution with impeccably high standards. How else do you explain Vanna White, Judge Judy and The Harlem Globetrotters all having stars? Related

As a young Robin Williams puts it in this film, Andy made himself the premise, and the entire world the punch line. When he started wrestling Kaufman had already become famous for his role as Latka on the smash hit sitcom Taxi and his appearances on Saturday Night Live. In Kaufmans live performances he would invite women in the audience to wrestle him, even offering a cash reward to any woman that could pin his shoulders to the mat. He would cast himself as the bad guy, or heel in wrestling terms, and say anything in order to get the audience to root against him in the matches. His extreme misogynistic comments offended many people who were not so willing to forget its just a character. When he took this act to the Mid-South professional wrestling territory in Tennessee it snowballed. He once tried to explain to the audience how to use a bar of soap. Needless to say, they hated him. This was also where he began his rivalry with Jerry The King Lawler, which is the central focus of the film. Without spoiling too much, Kaufmans Hollywood persona was the perfect antagonist to Lawler with his good ol boy southern charm. It made for an epic feud that included a famous scuffle on The Late Show with David Letterman. Nearly 30 years later, it is still unclear which parts of the feud were real and which parts were not.

Physicist Sameet Sreenivasan of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York conducted a detailed data analysis of novel and unique elements in movies throughout the 20th century. Sreenivasan analyzed keywords used on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) to observe trends. A novelty score was given based on the number of times any given keyword was used to describe another film. Films that had higher novelty scores featured a word that was rarely used to describe it. While films with lower novelty scores had a keyword used to describe a variety of them. A range from zero to one was applied as the novelty score, with the least novel being zero. To depict the evolution of film culture over time, Sreenivasan then lined up the scores chronologically. “You always hear about how the period from 1929 to 1950 was known as the Golden Age of Hollywood,” Sreenivasan said to Wired. “There were big movies with big movie stars. But if you look at novelty at that time, you see a downward trend.” After studio systems fell in the 1950s, filmmakers burst with new ideas which enhanced the movies during the 1960s. Films like Bonnie and Clyde in 1967, Breathless in 1960, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly in 1966 were all very well received. In addition, plot lines, novel styles and film techniques helped create the increase in Sreenivasan’s analysis of that period. The films analyzed spanned a 70-year period and the study appears in Nature Scientific Reports . 2013 CBS Interactive Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Lets try to combine forces with what the Short North Stage has going on. Short North Stage, a professional theater company, is performing the musical Sunday in the Park With George in the theater. The set reproduces the painting that inspired the musical: Georges Seurats A Sunday on La Grande Jatte 1884, depicting people in a Paris park. Were going to be sitting in the middle of the painting playing Schoenbergs Transfigured Night, which is written after a poem written by Richard Dehmel, which describes two lovers walking in (a) park, Niwa said. It is so perfect for this painting. . . . I am quite sure Schoenberg has never been played in the middle of the Seurat painting. The Short North Chamber Players include Niwa on violin; violinists Olev Viro and Ken Matsuda; and cellist Luis Biava, all members of the symphony. Other players in the chamber ensemble are violist Belinda Reuning Burge, a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and cellist Michael Carrera, who teaches at Ohio University in Athens. Theyll also perform Spheres of Influence, written by Denison University composer Ching-chu Hu and introduced in June. Hus work considers how identity is influenced by those around us. In writing this piece, Im very cognizant of the influences on me, the music I love, the music I studied, Hu said. When he learned that the concert was being organized, Hu contacted Viro and noted that he had just written Spheres of Influence and that it happened to be for a string sextet. His piece was soon added to the program.

Yet executives at Noble Corp. (NE) , a provider of deepwater oil drilling rigs, are in the process of moving headquarters from Baar to the British capital, citing the talented workforce and easy airline connections from Heathrow, Europes busiest international airport. On top of that, the U.K. tax rate is now competitive with Switzerland s historically corporate-friendly tax regime. Noble is part of a wave of overseas companies moving head offices to London, lured in part by the countrys declining corporate taxes. The relocations underscore Prime Minister David Cameron s efforts to make the country more attractive to foreign companies — and may help London become less dependent on the financial services industry, which has been retrenching since the 2008 crisis. There is definitely a swing back to the U.K. under way and I think there will be more, said Angus Winther, a senior adviser at investment bank Evercore Partners Inc. in London. There are huge advantages: you have a vast talent pool, infrastructure, language, and lowered tax rates. Last year 45 foreign companies moved their global or regional headquarters to London, up from just 25 in 2009, data from research group FDI Markets show. Among the moves this year: General Electric Co.s oil and gas unit, which is departing Florence, Italy .

Top Food Blogs Of 2013

Food events in the Washington area

So for the fourth year running, were ranking the top 25 food-oriented blogs, ranked according to readership and social media following. Theres plenty of time to argue the merits of what makes a food blog great, be it the amount of breaking news, quality of the recipes, layout, industry usefulness, or wide appeal, but for todays (and previous years) purposes, we took a very objective approach: we tracked down nearly 200 leading food blogs, using “best-of” lists from sites including Saveur and Babble, and then compiled four data points on each of them: the average number of monthly visitors for the past year (using Compete.coms data), and the number of Twitter followers, Facebook fans, and Pinterest followers. To arrive at the final 25, we factored in the number of average unique visitors (this accounted for 50 percent of each blogs score) and the data from the three social media components (which accounted for the remaining 50 percent). The blogs with the highest total scores made the cut. While the list didnt change dramatically from last year, there were a few notable differences. The Kitchn made a leap from number six up to number two, and Picky Palate jumped from number 12 up to number five on our list. Skinnytaste , which ranked third last year, fell to number 10 this year, and David Lebovitz , whose star just keeps rising, jumped from number 11 up to number six. Simply Recipes held onto the top spot for the fourth year in a row. There were also several newcomers, while others fell off the list entirely. This year we welcome Bakers Royale , Chocolate & Zucchini , Elanas Pantry , Food52 , Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef , Simple Bites , and Thug Kitchen to our list, while we say goodbye to Annies Eats , Gluten-Free Goddess, Mommys Kitchen , Our Best Bites , Pinch My Salt, TasteSpotting , and A Year of Slow Cooking. Falling off our list in no way indicates a drop in quality; reasons vary from blog to blog. Some have slowed down the rate of posting entries; others have simply been surpassed by other blogs in traffic.

Walmart Says Food Stamp Shopping Spree Was ‘Right Choice’

19, 2013. Patrick T. Fallon/Bloomberg/Getty Images Walmart has no regrets about allowing a wild shopping spree at two of its Louisiana stores when an electronic glitch lifted the spending caps on the cards of food stamp recipients. “We know we made the right choice,” Walmart spokesman Kory Lundberg told ABCNews.com today. The chain has no regrets even though Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services said food stamp recipients should have been limited to $50 each during the emergency and that Walmart will have to pay the difference. Lundberg declined to comment about how much the company may have lost or why it did not follow the emergency $50 limit. Read More: Walmart to Get Stuck With Most of Food Stamp Shopping Spree Courtesy KSLA.com Shelves in the Walmart store in Springhill, La., were cleared Saturday, when the store allowed purchases on EBT cards that didn’t show limits. Another Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling said, “Our focus was to continue serving our customers.” Food stamp recipients jammed into Walmarts in Mansfield and Springhill Saturday when word of the glitch spread. Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd said some customers were buying eight to ten grocery carts full of food. The store in Mansfield temporarily closed because of overcrowding and Mansfield Chief of Police Gary Hobbs said some shoppers left with up to eight carts of food and then went back for more. The food shelves were left bare and all the meat was sold as well, Lynd said. The shopping frenzy was triggered when the Electronic Benefits Transfer system went down because a back-up generator failed at 11 a.m. EST Saturday during a regularly-scheduled test, according to Xerox, a vendor for the EBT system and based in Norwalk, Conn. The outage erased limits on the EBT cards.
